We Media & Democracy Assessment 1
Reflecting on your research from the summer and from the BBC News app what have you learnt about your own media use and how you access news content.
Over summer, I learn about 'we media' and democracy, which is how people access news resources, how this is constantly changing and how we as an audience contribute to what we see on the news. For example the BBC is paid for by taxpayers meaning the news has be to presented as unbiased as possible in order to please its viewers. The BBC also have a have a news app for smartphones and tablets giving quick and easy access to news content in a matter of seconds. Within the app there is an option called 'my news' which allows users to choose categories they are interested in meaning they only have ti view the selected content. This alone shoes how much progress has been made even just from watching news on the TV, people now no longer have to sit through stories they aren't interested in.
News can also be posted and shared around social media platforms such as Facebook and Snapchat which are frequently used by a majority of different ages people, meaning content is constantly being shared by friends. However, this may not always be such a good thing because not everything posted is true, therefore stories may circulate that are unreliable or have been edited.
The BBC News app has become alot more popular over the recent years with a 9% increase between 2013 and 2014 alone. Personally I feel like these statistics would be alot higher if more people was to know about the app.
I didn't realise myself how much I actually used the TV as a source of consuming the news until i went on holiday. Every morning the news is always on the TV before i go to school, but it's always just in the background I never thought I actually payed any attention, however while I was away i found myself hearing about very little news stories.
To support the statement that news content is developing Dan Gillmor 2004 quotes " The spreading of an item of news, or of something much larger, will occur - much more so than today - without any help from mass in the meantime, even the beginnings of this shift are forcing all of us to adjust our assumptions and behaviour." Newspapers have suffered alot recently due to the changes with 'The Gaurdian' having to stop publishing newspapers and producing news content online. Statistics say that daily newspaper sales fall by half a million in a year.
